So, you have received the invitation, you have a date, and now it’s time for the next part: what are you going to wear to prom? Matching prom outfits could be fun and stylish. It makes you look good as a couple, and others can see you two are dates. We have put together a few tips on how you can match your prom dress, tuxedo or suit with your date’s outfit.
Talk to your date about your outfits
You go to prom together, so matching prom outfits should be something you do together too. Make sure you’re working together to get a look that you’re both interested in and feel comfy in. Taking time to discuss how you’re going to match your prom dress and tuxedo also shows that you value each other’s opinion. If you don’t talk to each other about your outfits, your tux and dress could clash and that’s the last thing you want on this memorable night, right? So, the protip is: communicate, communicate and then communicate some more.
Match basic to bold
A useful rule of thumb is that matching is way easier when you get the boldest item first and use it as a basis for the rest of your outfits. That’s why we recommend starting with shopping for the prom dress. Of course, the suit and dress are just as important, and we’re not saying the dress should be bolder than the suit. But matching a tuxedo to a dress is usually easier than the other way around, just because dresses are often available in more colors, fabrics and prints than tuxes. (Unless you’ll be shopping at our collection of fun prom suits and tuxes – then we advise to work the other way around. Look at some pictures from our customers below for some inspiration!)
Use warm or cold colors plus neutral ones
It’s helpful to know which colors work well together. The easiest way is dividing colors according to temperature: warm, cold, or neutral. Warm colors are made with orange, red, yellow and combinations of these (like pinks, browns, beiges and yellows). Cool colors are typified by blues, greens and purples. White, black and grey are neutral and can basically be combined with all colors. In general, warm colors will always match best with other warm colors, as will cool with cool. So, matching your prom dress and tuxedo doesn’t mean you have to choose the exact same colors/shades of the same color – you can just play with it.
To guarantee that you pick matching colors, you could take the dress/suit (or a piece of the fabric) with you to the tux shop. Or keep the fabric next to the screen in case you’ll be shopping online.
Match prom dress and tuxedo with accessories
If one of you prefers a bright colored or printed outfit, it’s a safe option to let the other one opt for a more neutral outfit and match the prom dress and tuxedo with accessories. For example, if the girl wears a blush pink dress, a grey, black or white tuxedo would always match well, and you could add blush pink (or other warm colored) accessories to coordinate with the dress.
The most popular tuxedo accessories are pocket squares, cummerbunds, neckties, hats and suspenders. They are all available in many different colors and prints, which makes it easy to find a matching one. For girls there are also various options when it comes to accessories: for example, clutches, bracelets, hair clips, necklaces and hair pieces could really elevate your outfit and help matching his outfit.
Don’t try to make it perfect
Of course, we all aim for perfect matching prom outfits, but don’t stress about matching every single detail. No matter what you’ll be wearing, if you wear it with confidence, you’ll look gorgeous anyway. It’s totally fine if you have different shoe colors for example. In the end prom is meant to be a fun and memorable experience for the both of you, so don’t forget to enjoy, not take yourself too seriously and dance the night away!
